THE CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY: AN EFFECTIVE INVOLVEMENT

A great effort is being made to offer the youths better chances to succeed through an improved quality of training, particularly making it well connected with the reality of the labour market. To deal with this strategic goal a few major interventions have been singled out:

  • Updating and upgrading of workshops specially by acquiring technologica machinery with the direct help of BN Dockyard;
  • Effective links between students, instructors and technicians;
  • Opportunities for learners to make direct experience of the actual life in a working condition;

For this reason BN Dockyard and Cooperative Society under Welfare Directorate have been involved in the activity of the Institute thus offering effective support through Technical support. Through their interventions the students have benefited greatly from a relevant improvement in the facilities of the workshops. The Institute wishes to register special thanks to the Welfare Directorate, NHQ & Bangladesh Navy Dockyard. Their outstanding support has been fundamental to the development of the life of the Institute.

In the socio-economic context of Bangladesh, the primary needs facing the youth living in cities are the following:

  • The opportunity of adequate professional training;
  • The identification of job opportunities;
  • The spreading amongst the youth sentiments of self esteem and a spirit of solidarity at work.

History & Development

History

There are huge resources in Bangladesh Navy Dockyard. But all the workers of Dockyard are not very well paid and some of them undergo financial hardships when retired. To do welfare for these workers, a proposal was sent to Welfare Directorate at NHQ to establish a Technical Institute using the talent of the skilled (both in service & retired) personnel to run the institute and provide training to the unemployed youth of the society. Over populated Bangladesh is an urgent need of effective educational opportunities in the technical field specially in the maritime sector, where there is a huge potential. The problem is greater for the youth who having completed their secondary & higher secondary education, cannot continue and end up with no qualification at all. For them the possibility of employment and the chance of a dignified life become rather slim.

Development

It is important for Bangladesh to develop vocational education. Bangladesh’s workforce is facing with two problems, low quality and a lack of skilled technicians, who only account for one third of the total.  These problems have greatly affected Bangladesh’s innovation, resulting in low-end products, and low remittances of these workers employed abroad.

Cdre M Jasim Uddin Bhuiyan,ndc,psc  Commodore Superintendent Dockyard took up the challenge of Card.  Supported by Welfare Directorate, NHQ under the guidance of CNS R Adm Z U Ahmed, ndc, psc started the project with some officers of Bangladesh Navy Dockyard.
The Institute is located beside BN Dockyard New Mooring, Chittagong.  The institute comprises of workshops, classrooms, and offices, covering a built area of about 2,000 sq. meters.

AIM

Education means to introduce the youth into the reality in all its factors; for this reason reality is the point of reference of the work in the institution. Here, through the relationship with the instructor, the young person becomes aware of his personal reality and he is introduced to the knowledge of the world around him. This relationship provokes and leads to the development of the inborn potentialities of the person in a way that is both rich and unique.

Our vision is to make this institution the largest in South Asia by 2012 specially in the maritime field.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of Cooperative Society Training Institute are:

  1. To offer models of professional formation adequate to the actual labour market needs.
  2. To train instructors for the implementation of capacity building activities and orientation to work.
  3. To set up an informative system able to facilitate the match between the trainees and employers in order to create job opportunities.
  4. To promote self employment possibilities.
